Winter Is Coming: How to Spot Signs of Seasonal Depression on Your Team

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can quietly affect the well-being and productivity of your employees as winter approaches. Even if no one on your team develops full-blow SAD, though, the winter blues are extremely common. Let’s take a look at the signs of seasonal depression, along with practical ways to support your team during the colder months.

Signs of SAD

Run-of-the-mill winter blues and seasonal affective disorder share a lot of the same symptoms, and telling them apart is largely a matter of degree. If your team members display any of these common signs, it’s worth taking a closer look.

  • Acting withdrawn and disinterested
  • Lower energy levels
  • Overeating or not eating much at all
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Seeming depressed or overwhelmed

Note that not everyone experiences seasonal depression in the same way, and not everyone who is struggling will display obvious signs. But you know your employees. If something just seems “off,” your instincts are likely correct.

How to Help

While you can’t fix every problem, there are active steps you can take to help your team members feel better all winter long. Here are a few ideas:

  • Change it up. Short days and long nights can make regular work routines feel like drudgery. Wherever possible, try to make even small changes to your processes. The break in routine can help people feel more interested and engaged.
  • Get some sun. Consider holding meetings outside or hosting an outdoor picnic at lunchtime. If that isn’t possible, let in as much natural light as you can, or consider adding natural light simulators in strategic spots. Sunlight is a proven treatment for both SAD and the general winter blues.
  • Express your appreciation. A bit of thanks can go a long way toward lifting anyone’s spirits. Consider adding shoutouts to your regular team meetings or holding an employee appreciation event.
  • Offer resources. These steps can help shake off the winter blues, and can even help those with seasonal depression manage their symptoms. But some people need a bit of extra help. An employee assistance program and strong mental health benefits will go a long way toward ensuring that your employees have the help they need all year long.
