We all know how it feels to work with someone who talks too loud, steals other people’s food, or even takes credit for their work. But a great coworker improves the workplace for everyone. Here are three simple ways to support your teammates and become a better coworker.
Act with Intention
One of the best ways to become a better coworker (and human!) is to bring intentionality to your actions. We’re all so busy, with so much on our plates, that it’s easy to go into autopilot. But when you take the time to slow down and act with intention, you can choose behaviors that show others you value them. Whether it’s expressing genuine appreciation or asking how you can help, your purposeful actions can boost morale.
Be Curious and Open
Do your best to avoid assumptions. Instead, practice active listening. Seek to understand each coworker’s point of view. Everyone has something unique to contribute, and working together with a sense of curiosity can help lead to the best solutions. Make sure you are open and transparent as well, allowing your coworkers to get to know the real you.
Focus on Commonalities
If you want to become a better coworker, you’ll have to learn to get along with those who are very different from you. But you doubtless still have something in common. Maybe you’re both parents or you attended the same high school or you root for the same football team. Start with common ground, and it will be much easier to start to build strong working relationships. Of course, finding these commonalities means spending some time simply getting to know each other. Don’t be afraid to eat lunch with someone you don’t know well or to suggest an after-work get-together for your entire team.
