Does My “Dream Job” Actually Exist?

Is there really such a thing as a “dream job”? When you close your eyes and imagine your future, you can probably visualize a general idea of the job you would love. Maybe it offers a lot of flexibility in interesting projects or an excellent work-life balance. But the truth is that every role has its downside. Instead of focusing on your “dream job,” here are some tips to find the right position for you.

Consider Your Passions

There’s an old saying: “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” This is actually a myth since every job will feel like work on some days. But passion can go a long way toward keeping your spirits up. Think through what really inspires you, and then find a way to bring some of that into your work.

Focus on Your Skills

It would be nearly impossible to get a job for which you don’t have the basic required skills. There are two ways to handle this: narrow your search to jobs that require skills you already have or find a way to gain the skills you need. For example, you might do some volunteer work or take an online certification course. Also, remember that a lot of important skills are transferable. Things like communication and organization are necessary in any workplace, and it doesn’t matter exactly where you learned them.

Don’t Forget Your Values

You won’t be truly happy in a role if the company doesn’t share at least some of your values. These are the intangibles that make you feel like you’re doing something meaningful and important. Do you value inclusion and diversity? Do you want to give back to your community? Maybe you prioritize honesty and transparency. Figure out your core values and then look for a company that supports them.
