How Can Employers Combat Summer Attendance Issues?

Summer can be tough at any workplace. Your employees (and likely you as well!) would much rather be outside having fun in the sun. It’s easy for an overall slump in production to set in, and you may be dealing with more callouts than usual. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to keep things running smoothly.

Create a Relaxed Atmosphere

You never want to compromise safety or quality. But you can still create an overall atmosphere that feels more fun and laid-back during the long summer days. Play some music. Relax your dress code. If it won’t interfere with safety, consider themed costume days complete with a catered lunch.

Bring the Outside In

If you have windows, throw open the curtains. Bring in plants. Encourage employees to set up pictures of their family and pets around their workstations. Consider offering free summertime snacks in the break room, such as watermelon and ice cream.

Set Summer Goals

Your employees will find it easier to focus if they’re working toward something specific. Set companywide goals for the summer. Then, divide those goals into smaller milestones. Create teams and issue friendly challenges each week, with a small prize for the winners.

Get Out of the Office

Summer is the perfect time for a company retreat. This could be as extensive as a multi-day getaway or as simple as a picnic to which family members are invited. Or you could take everyone on a teambuilding trip to a ropes course, escape room, or other destination.

It’s perfectly normal for your workplace to hit a summer slump. Loss of productivity and an increase in callouts are to be expected. But when you proactively plan for these challenges, there is no reason to lose a couple of months altogether. Keep your employees excited about coming to work, and you can all have a more successful summer.
