Global Diversity

October brings us Global Diversity Awareness Month.  This should remind us of the positive impact of what a diverse workforce can have on society. More and more, the world becomes a place where cultures and customs come together.  Though at times we might be uncertain about what is appropriate, there is an opportunity to learn whether a question or the behavior is taboo.  Cultures of being enlightened are likely, when we ask questions and when we are open to learning.

What does Diversity Mean?

It’s a term used widely across many settings and in different contexts but how is the word diversity actually defined? The Oxford Dictionary tells us that the word diversity refers to ‘a range of many people or things that are very different from each other’.

Diversity isn’t something to be afraid of. It should be something that we celebrate and promote.  Diversity means that different qualities and experiences of each individual help to give us a different perspective on the person next to us.

What about inclusion?

Inclusion is about moving beyond a simple tolerance of the things that make us different, including embracing and celebrating the ideas that diversity can bring to a whole host of settings, such as the workplace.

Incorporate Diversity in the Workplace

Tell stories – Offer the opportunity for new employees to share stories from their culture. While legends and folklore often seem similar across cultures, their differences, and how they are told can be colorful and even enlightening to learn.

Show Your Team

Make it visual – Put a map up in your headquarters. Place a pin for each member of your team to represent their nationality or geographic background. Some corporate companies may touch on countries all over the map, while others may barely reach a few countries. The point is to see how each member of your team can more effectively contribute to your company because of his or her experience. By visually understanding the impact your teams’ diversity has, the more your company will thrive.

Bringing Teams Together

Have a potluck – Food always brings people together. What could be better when the foods of different nations come together? Encourage employees to bring their most authentic recipes to share and the histories behind them, too. Take the taste testing a step further and have a contest. Blindfold competitors and see if they can name the country of origin for each dish. The winner earns bragging rights!
