A Kinder Society

A Kinder Society

be kinder

Can we have a kinder society?  Society is a mixed bag of people. There are countless people who will go out of their way to help others without asking for anything in return. However, there are also those who are simply unkind, judgmental, and even abusive to others.  Each of us need to be kinder to the person next to us and then that person be kinder to the person next to them.  If we all commit, we can have a kinder society.

Technology

Modern society is filled with technology which can be used to help people across the world or do the reverse and apply judgement and abuse at an unprecedented level. We live in a world of social media, where bullying just doesn’t happen on the playground, but it continues behind the closed doors of the homes of those most venerable.

Social Media

The World Health Organization predicts that more than 700 000 people die by suicide every year. Furthermore, for each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts.  The growing integration of social media in our lives only magnify the damage caused by trolls and those who wish to judge.

Perspective

In psychology, there is an exercise called perspective taking.  Where in which we try to take the perspective of another.  To walk in the shoes of that person and feel what their life may have felt like. This helps us to appreciate that person’s experiences and has shown to increase empathy towards that person, even in cases where we do not know the person.  Perhaps, we should be more mindful that everyone can hurt. That everyone can feel pain. We are, after all, only human.

Be mindful

Try to be mindful each day.  Below are 5 acts of kindness that we can all try.

  1. Do your neighbor a favor! Maybe they could use a hand cutting the grass or watering their flowers. It could certainly brighten their day.
  2. Buy a stranger coffee. The next time you’re in line at the coffee shop, make someone’s day by offering to put theirs on your tab.
  3. Sign up to volunteer. There’s nothing quite like giving your time to help someone in need. Maybe it’s helping out at a homeless shelter.   In every community there are wonderful people who just need a little of our help.
  4. Clean out your house and donate to a local charity. If you don’t need it, chances are someone else might. Many organizations near you likely collect used (in good condition) clothing and other household items.
  5. Donate. In every community, there are always people in need and your generosity and kindness can go a long way.
