Happy Mad Hatter Day

Happy Mad Hatter Day

Mad hatter day

Today, October 6th is set aside each year to bring out your silly side while you celebrate National Mad Hatter Day.  Remember what rabbit said in Alice in Wonderland? “Oh, my fur and whiskers, I’m late, I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say ‘hello, goodbye,’ I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”  Well, today’s the date!  It’s National Mad Hatter Day! Today is a day to remember to be silly, do silly things. Today, breakout from the usual routine.  Tomorrow you can adult again.

#MadHatterDay

The fictional character, The Hatter (aka, The Mad Hatter) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,  typically acts silly. And that’s why the creators of this day decided on the theme of

silliness for National Mad Hatter Day. Sir John Tenniel illustrated The Mad Hatter and all of Carroll’s colorful characters beginning in 1864.  Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865.

Mad As a Hatter?

The phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when haberdasheries used mercury nitrate. The exposure to this metal over time caused these tradesmen to develop symptoms making people believe they were mad.

The Message of Alice in Wonderland?

I think the theme we can all gather from this wacky, delightful movie is that there is a time to grow up.  But not today.  Not on Mad Hatter Day!  Author Lewis Carroll adored the innocent way children approach the world and he loved to write about it.

Today I Pledge

Personally, I’m going to take inspiration from the Mad Hatter today.  I will speak only absurdly (which, some say I do every-day) or I may even go on a confusing adventure!  Yes, that’s it.  I’m going to make a point of going up the down staircase and I will even be so bold as to go in the out-door and out the in-door.  Ask ridiculous riddles like The Hatter’s own, “Why is a raven like a writing desk?”  Or wear a funny hat at work all day. Let’s all celebrate this day with silliness!  Whatever you do, be sure to invite others to join in the fun.  Tomorrow is time again to get your work done…
