Ceteris Paribus – All things Being Equal

Ceteris paribus is a Latin phrase that generally means “all other things being equal.” We have all heard the phrase ‘if all things being equal’. But is it true? If all things are equal why do we compete or have competitors? Or if all things are equal does that mean that businesses are essentially the same? Or all opportunities will result with the same conclusion?

These days, we see the phrase “diversity, equity and inclusion” everywhere in the business world. We should, because a company with a diverse team contributes to better ideas and tend to craft more creative and effective solutions. This ultimately benefits the companies’ bottom line.

Diversity is not just hiring people of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, religious beliefs, disabilities, and sexual orientations. It also should include employees with varied experiences, education, skill sets, personalities, and cultural beliefs. Businesses are becoming a place where cultures and customs come together.
Workplace Equity
Equality and equity are often used interchangeably but are two distinct concepts. Equality gives everyone access to the same opportunities. Equity in the workplace means that the opportunity is equally advantageous to everyone because it’s offered in a way that takes diversity into account. In other words, equity will eliminate barriers and level the playing field by giving each person the right kind of support.
Workplace Inclusion
Through social norms and behaviors, a culture of workplace inclusion ensures that everyone is given equal opportunity to participate and contribute. It is when the organization has a mix of gender, generations, and cultural backgrounds. And when all employees are listened to and welcomed that they feel part of a team. That is when employees bring their best selves to work.
Good employees are not defined by ethnicity, gender, etc. DEI is not only the right thing to do, it also makes good business sense. Companies with a culture and DEI policies increase their talent pool by re-thinking and re-designing their way of doing business. This results in a more diverse talent pool.
