There is no simple answer to this question. The reasons for pursuing (or offering) an internship vary. From the student’s perspective, internships capture the value of real-world experience. While this can be conveyed, to some extent, with class projects, nothing compares to hands-on experience in a fast-paced work environment.

For employers, internships provide a powerful recruitment opportunity. Organizations can capture and shape a new generation of hardworking employees. The risk of taking on an intern is minimal, since committing to work with interns is for just a few short months at a time. The upside is if the organization is pleased with their performance, they can make a greater commitment while streamlining the recruitment, hiring, and the onboarding processes.
Never to Late
It is never too late to upskill or even switch career paths. These days more and more companies are open to having experienced workers on board. An internship, while in the middle of your career might seem unusual, it is not impossible. These Minternships (mid-career internships) are on the rise.
Students are often reluctant to intern because they worry their internship will only consist of uninspiring tasks for little or no money. The truth is, although not all internships pay in cash, they do pay in other ways. Internships give you a foot in the door — so take it!
