What is not measured is not managed. The mention of Six Sigma and the first thought that comes to a lot of people’s minds is its application in the manufacturing industry for eliminating wastage in defective products. Six Sigma a disciplined, statistical-based, data-driven approach and continuous improvement methodology can also be of use to HR.

DMAIC process in HR

Companies can reap big benefits from streamlining the recruiting processes. Top candidates are hard to come by in a highly competitive talent market. The prize often goes to the company that can be first with a job offer. But the hiring process can have many bottlenecks, and too little effort to improve. The Six Sigma Methodology comprises five data-driven stages, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC).  These aim to reduce waste and improve performance. Waste can be negative factors such as high turnover, unnecessary overtime, ineffective onboarding, or work-related injuries.

When fully implemented, DMAIC standardizes an organization’s problem-solving approach and shapes how it forms new process solutions.

Hurry and Wait

One of the most common wastes of time in the recruitment process is the ‘waiting game’. Such as waiting for feedback, the indecisions, waiting for offer releases and waiting on application information releases.  There are a number of HR functions where the Six Sigma methodology can be of help:

  • Create a ‘qualification’ template to help establish the ideal candidates with the right team, leadership, and technical abilities.
  • Write specific, detailed job descriptions not just to attract candidates, but also to help them completely understand what the job entails.
  • A strategy that will help the company retain staff.
  • Training for staff and team leaders to include conflict management or conflict resolution, communication skills and dealing with issues that would affect the teams’ effectiveness.

Six Sigma certification best for HR

The Six Sigma Black Belt in HR Certification program covers the operational roles and integration requirements that Human Resource Managers (HRM) provide, both within an organization to support Six Sigma initiatives and within HR to support its own projects. Six Sigma provides simple yet valuable tools to help translate needs into metrics, while identifying and closing gaps.  Six Sigma can be used across a wide range of HR functions.  However, using it in the recruitment stage can be particularly important in helping to attract the right candidate from the start.
