As a job seeker, social media can be a very powerful method to help you find a job. From networking to researching potential employers, there are a ton of smart ways to use social media in your job search.

Social media use in hiring refers to the examination by employers of job applicants’ social media profiles as part of the hiring assessment.

Culture Fit

Most employers are looking for a reason to hire you.  They want to see your personality and your creativeness.  Employers also want to see your wide range of interests and how you would fit into the company culture.  And social media is a great way for employers to see this as your ‘profiles’ offer a real insight into who you are.

Appropriate Posting

In fact, 70% of employers said they research candidates by reviewing what is posted on social media accounts. That’s not all: 57% said they have passed on a candidate because of their social media, with 40% of that group claiming the candidate posted something inappropriate or provocative.

Building Your Brand

Social media pages help to build your personal brand.  Networking and connecting in ways you can’t in person. You are more visible to hiring managers and recruiters that mine social media for prospective candidates, even if you aren’t actively searching for a job. Although it’s not the deciding factor in the hiring process, it could influence a decision.

Be Searchable

Scan Me

It’s not a good sign if hiring managers can’t find you online. The vast majority of Fortune 500 companies use social media recruiting as a tool to find and screen prospective employees. In fact, 21% of employers polled said they wouldn’t consider someone who doesn’t have a social presence. It looks like you either have something to hide or nothing to show, both of which will send your resume to the bottom of the pile. And you don’t want to be on the bottom of the pile!

The Right Person

Having no social media pages might make you harder to find, but it won’t take you out of the running. Employers are looking for the right person, not just the right profile. So always focus on your professional growth first.

Be sure you are posting appropriate pictures of yourself. Your social media pages are just another way an employer can find you, and these tips can help you highlight your best social media image.
