Sarcastic Awareness Month

Sarcastic Awareness Month

Friendly SarcasticAs we all know, October is the month notorious for Halloween themed events, television specials, and gaudy Halloween costumes. However, you might not be aware that October is National Sarcastic Awareness Month, or as some may call it National Sarcasm Month.  Sarcasm can be hilarious when it’s all done in good fun.

And So, It Begins

So, on October 1st, National Sarcastic Awareness Month begins and the fun will last all month. Parents, here’s an example of how you might use sarcasm with your kids every day;  Kids, “Hi Mom.  What are you doing?”  Mom, “Putting on my shoes so I can run in the flea marathon!”  It is thought that sarcasm dates back to the Viking era.  They then passed it along to the British around 1050 A.D.  So basically, it’s been around for-ever!  Now, it is casually used in daily conversation (though sometimes, it might be under our breath). It’s a simple, fun way to make somebody laugh.  And who doesn’t enjoy laughing?

An Art Form? Or Entertainment?

The way it is said, the tone of the voice and even the facial expression has a lot to do with the way a sarcastic remark is received.  But, there are also people who intentionally use sarcasm to hurt those around them.  If it is not meant in a kind funny way, it should not be use.  Sarcasm should be used to bring laughter to an otherwise awkward situation.  Its entertainment value is priceless.  People such as Groucho Marx have found fame by using it.  And Comedians like Bill Murray and Ron White successfully use sarcasm to make people laugh.

Irony

Sarcasm can be looked at as a form of irony.  However, for most of us it is just another way to expresses humor. Most people would consider themselves to be sarcastic.  And others might catch themselves being sarcastic with a friend or colleague.  Sarcasm can also be used as a way to spice up a conversation if it gets a bit to monotonous.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Be sarcastic and encourage others to join in. Make it fun! Have a laugh!

  • Hang out with some of your sarcastic friends (we all have them) and watch of how they work it into their conversations.
  • See how many sarcastic sayings you can create.
  • Throw a party. Invite your friends over to watch some comedians who use sarcasm as part of their act.

Above all, use sarcasm to bring joy into yours and others lives.  We all need a laugh sometimes.
