Did you know it was on on this day in 1643, that John Winthrop, the Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor, spotted a tornado in Essex County?
Secret Service
July 5th, 1865 is when the U. S. Secret Service was formed. Their main goal is to protect the leaders of the United States and secondly, to combat the counterfeiting of the US currency. It was was first formed under the Department of the Treasury, but then was re-organized in 2002 to fall under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security.
Bikini
The French engineer, Louis Réard, unveiled a daring two-piece swimsuit on this day in Paris in 1946. A Parisian showgirl modeled this new fashion which was then dubbed the ‘bikini.’
Bikini America
America was a bit prudish about wearing the bikini and resisted until the early 1960s. Brian Hyland, a 1960 pop singer, immortalized the bikini with his song; “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini”.
E-Commerce
The e-commerce company Amazon, was incorporated on this day in 1994. Beginning as an online bookstore, before it grew into the multi-national company it is today.
NASA
On July 5th, 1966, NASA launched the spacecraft Saturn IB from Cape Kennedy, Florida. The un-manned Apollo mission was meant to test the S-IVB design. This design was later used in the Apollo missions to the moon. This mission was called a success even though it exploded because of a ‘spark or an impact’.
