History of the 4th

4th of JulyHistory of the 4th

The history of the 4th actually began on July 2nd.  That’s when the Continental Congress voted for the Declaration of Independence on that day.  But from then on, the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

Early July 4th Celebrations

During the pre-revolutionary years, the 13 Colonies  held annual birthday celebrations for King George III.  These would include the ringing of bells, bonfires, parades, as well as public speeches.  However, in the summer of 1776 colonists began to celebrate the birth of American independence. And, in doing so, held mock funerals for the King which symbolized the end of the monarchy’s hold on America.

Fireworks-Fireworks-Fireworks

It would be hard to imagine the 4th of July without fireworks. But how did it start?  The tradition of setting off  fireworks on the 4th of July first started in 1777 and took place in Philadelphia.  It was the first organized celebration of Independence. And, a ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute in honor of the 13 colonies.  As a result, the next day the Pennsylvania Evening Post reported: “at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

Saying Good-bye on the 4th of July

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both were co-signatories of the Declaration of Independence.  And later both served as presidents of the United States.  By a remarkable coincidence, they both died on July 4, 1826. That day marked the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
