The Great Resignation of 2022

The Great Resignation

The Great Resignation is here, and millions of U.S. workers are quitting their jobs—or planning to. In fact, a whopping 65% of working adults say they are looking for a new gig. Luckily for job hunters, the U.S. now has more job openings than any time in history.  Last year, some employees put their job search on pause in favor of job security. While others found new passions and are looking to make a career transition.  Many though are feeling stalled and simply need a change. Some reasons for the Great Resignation of 2022 are that workers are facing burnout, dips in morale, and feelings of disconnection from their peers, family, and friends.

Resignation – Retention Myths

Don’t fall for the usual talent retention myths. Focus efforts on things that can make a real difference, like company culture. Here are three talent retention myths to avoid:

Myth # 1: Retain employees by offering more money or a promotion. According to HBR, nine out of  ten people would rather have a boss who cares about them finding meaning and success at work, than receive a 20% pay increase. It could be flexibility or a remote workplace that they value, and the return to the office is pushing them away.

Myth # 2: Retain employees for as long as possible. It’s no longer the expectation that employees will “grow up” in one company.  Its a fact, workers – especially Millennials and Gen Z – want new growth opportunities and can’t always find them with their current employer. Be sure to foster a culture of growth and development. By doing this, it can extend someone’s tenure with your company.

Myth # 3: Employees leave because they are unhappy.  Yes, some workers will resign but that’s not true for everyone. Don’t put up a wall, create a safe environment where you support those who are taking the next step to further their career. In fact, wish them well in their next chapter. Be sure to keep the communication open and you will retain a brand ambassador – who just may return one day with a stronger skill set than when they left.
