INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2022

International Women’s Day

Let’s remember international women today.  Madame Curie and her research alongside and then after her husband’s death to find the Polio Vaccine. No one will forget Mother Teresa and all of her out-pouring of love and selfless acts of kindness. Princess Diana will always be remembered.  But did you know on January 1, 2019, women in India formed a 385-mile “wall of protest” to fight for gender equality?  Please remember all the women that are struggling today to support their families and trying to survive in Ukraine’s battle.

Today I introduce you to Kasturba Gandhi

Kasturba Gandhi (https://www.mkgandhi.org/articles/kasturba-gandhi.htmlwas an integral part of Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi’s evolution from lawyer then, to becoming the face of India’s non-violent struggle for independence.  She was known simply as Ba (mother and grandmother) often not recognized; however, she was the first person who was part of the face of Mahatma.  Ba was a pillar of support for Mahatma like no other.  She was the one person who could disagree with Mahatma and point out his own mistakes to him. She was his companion, wife, supporter, caretaker and later in life his representative too.

Kasturba’s strength came through her simple and gentile ways.   She was among the first of the Satyagrahis (a non-violent resister).  Keeping pace with her husband each step of the way as she supported him for social, economic, and political equality for Indians in India and, before that while they lived in South Africa.

Gandhi wrote in his biography, “According to my earlier experience, she was very obstinate. Despite all my pressure she would just do as she wished. This led to short or long periods of estrangement between us. But as my public life expanded, my wife bloomed forth and deliberately lost herself in my work.”

Who can support International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is not country, group, nor organization specific. No one government, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. This day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. Make International Women’s Day your day to do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women.
