WHO TO SPOTLIGHT FIRST?
Each year since 1980 March is set aside as Women’s History Month. But where do I begin? What woman should I present to you as someone to be remembered? Should it be the many, many suffragettes who marched, suffered, and stood together until women had the right to vote in 1920? Who should I emulate for their achievements? Should it be Sandra Day O’Conner the first woman sworn into the Supreme Court in 1981? Or Rosa Parks on that bus for her bravery in 1955? Or Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman sworn into the Supreme Court in 1993 (and the first jewish woman) for her quiet persistence to move gender equality, workers rights and separation of church and state to the forefront of the legal world? Should it be Katharine Graham who made history after becoming the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Graham began working at the Washington Post in 1938 and led the paper from 1963 until 1991.
ITS PERSONAL TO ME
This month is of particular importance to me. As a child I remember my mother (as a married woman) was not able to get her own bank account or her own credit until the 1960s when women gained the right to open a bank account on their own. However, it wasn’t until 1974, that the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed which prohibited credit discrimination on the basis of gender. As a child I remember with delight when my mother drove the very first car she was able to purchase on her own. I will never forget her glowing face as she threw open the front door and shouted at all of us kids, “Come on kids, lets take a ride.” So, forgive me if I take this moment to praise my mother, a housewife, that fought a quiet fight without me even knowing it as child. So, I would humbly like to take a moment to praise all our mothers, grandmothers, and women kinfolk that we all have and say CONGRATS – ITS YOUR MONTH!!
