Sometimes you don’t need a staffing agency to find someone. You already know who you want.
Maybe it’s a seasonal worker who did a great job last year. A referral from someone on your team. A student who’s home for the summer. Or a retiree who wants to come back part time for a big project.
You want them on the job. You just don’t want the payroll setup, tax filings and paperwork that come with adding a new employee. That’s exactly what payrolling services are for.
How payrolling works
Payrolling is simple. You pick the person. Cardinal puts them on our payroll.
Here’s what that looks like:
-
You choose the worker. You’ve already recruited or identified the person you want.
-
We handle onboarding. Cardinal takes care of the new hire paperwork and gets them set up.
-
They work for you. The worker reports to your facility and follows your direction, just like any other team member.
-
We pay them. Cardinal handles weekly pay, payroll taxes and related employment admin.
-
You get one simple invoice. No extra payroll processing on your side.
You keep control of the work. We take care of the employment side.
When payrolling makes sense
Payrolling isn’t the right fit for every situation, but it works well in a few common ones.
Bringing back seasonal workers
If you have people who return every busy season, payrolling makes it easy to bring them back without re-onboarding them onto your own payroll each year.
Short-term projects
A special project that will last a few weeks or months doesn’t always justify adding someone to your permanent headcount. Payrolling gives you the person you need without the long-term commitment.
Headcount limits
Some companies have strict limits on how many employees they can add, even when the work is there. Payrolled workers are on Cardinal’s payroll, which can help you get the work done while you stay within those limits.
Testing a new role
Not sure if a new position will stick? Payrolling lets you try it out before you create a permanent role.
Interns and retirees
Students, interns and retirees often work on flexible or temporary schedules. Payrolling keeps things simple for everyone.
Payrolling vs. temporary staffing
The main difference is who finds the worker.
-
Temporary staffing: Cardinal recruits, screens and places the worker for you.
-
Payrolling: You find the worker. Cardinal handles the employment side.
Many of our clients use both. They rely on us to recruit for most roles, then use payrolling for people they’ve found on their own.
What your payrolled workers get
Payrolled workers are Cardinal employees, which means eligible workers have access to the same support as our other associates:
-
Weekly pay by direct deposit
-
Medical, dental, vision, life and prescription coverage
-
Wellness programs and an Employee Assistance Program
-
Paid or unpaid sick leave and PTO, depending on local regulations
That’s good for them, and it makes your offer more attractive. See the full list on our Why Cardinal Staffing page.
Why work with Cardinal
Joan Fought founded Cardinal Staffing in Port Clinton, Ohio, in 1994 after 15 years in the staffing industry. Her idea was simple: treat people with respect and earn their trust, day by day. That idea still guides how we work.
Today we have 10+ offices across Ohio, Michigan and Arizona, and we’re part of the SURESTAFF family, one of the largest staffing firms in the U.S. You get the resources of a large company with a local team that knows your area and picks up the phone.
Along with payrolling, we offer temporary, temp-to-hire, direct hire and onsite services, so you can use the right model for each role.
Let’s make it easy
If you’ve found the right person but don’t want the paperwork, let’s talk. Tell us who you want to bring on and when, and we’ll take care of the rest.
