Style or Personality

Leadership style or personality types

If you’re applying for a new position, interviewers might ask about your management style. Even if you’ve never had a leadership role, this question may come up. They don’t just ask about your management style when you apply for a managerial position. People approach tasks and leadership differently so you should expect to be asked how you handled a project or a responsibility.

Talent Search

During recruitment, the main attention is paid to the candidates’ qualifications.  However, the same attention is not placed on deciphering if they would be a good managerial fit.  That’s why 82% of the time companies fail to match candidates to the right management position. Companies lose millions each year due to poor management.  In fact, 57% of employees leave their jobs because of their boss.

Team Needs

A successful leader must evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each of their team members in order to ensure the most success. Research has shown that an individual’s personality ‘type’ is related to their personality ‘style’ and that contributes to how well the team responds to their ‘leadership style.’  While identifying a specific personality type that works best in management jobs is difficult, it is possible to identify the different types of characteristics of a person that are well-suited to a management role.

Temperament

Managing people is not easy.  Humans are intelligent, strong-willed, and often self-absorbed.  This means that they are often focused on their own feeling and interests.  As a result, managers have to walk a fine line between encouragement, frustration, excitement and sometimes need to juggle all three simultaneously to complete the task.

Characteristics

Your personality is essentially the result of the way your temperament interacts with a given situation. As a manager, your personal approach to people and tasks impacts how you lead, motivate, and treat workers.

Style Right for You

Your management style depends on many factors, the most important ones being:

  • Your personality and management skills
  • The culture of the company
  • The team members you are currently managing

If you want to advance in your management style, it is essential to recognize that you may need different management styles in different situations.  Spend some time assessing your current management style and change or enhance the aspects you would like to change. Over time, you will become the leader you want to become!
