Women’s History Month Comes to an End

women's history month

As Women’s History Month comes to an end this year, I hope you have celebrated this month by telling a story of a woman that made a difference in your life. A woman that inspires you and that you admire. By sharing these stories, we empower girls to follow their dreams.  For me, it will always be of my grandmother and my mother.  These women shaped my life by their quiet strength to believe that their daughters and granddaughters can ‘become more’ and ‘achieve more’ than their lives and society had allowed them to do.

Half the Population

Women and girls make up half the world’s population. Yet far too often, voices, experiences, and contributions are overlooked, or undervalued.  Women are underrepresented in the halls of political and economic power, and overrepresented in poverty.  Some battles have been partly won, like voting rights and equal access to education.  However, women are still disproportionally affected by all forms of violence, equal pay for equal work and discrimination.

Pioneers and Trailblazers

Women’s history is full of trailblazers in the fight for equality in the United States. Abigail Adams implored her husband to “remember the ladies” when envisioning the American colonies government and  Clara Barton with her enduring legacy in the founding of the American Red Cross.  And of course to suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton fighting for women’s right to vote.  The bravery it took for Rosa Parks’ on that bus just to remain seated.  To Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed as a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Hillary Clinton becoming the first female nominee for president. And today, Kamala Harris, our first female Vice President AND a woman of color.

Achieving Progress

These women pioneers were influential in achieving progress for some of our country’s most pressing social and political issues. From the fight for equal rights,  to establishing important disaster relief and social services, their work and leadership has left a lasting impression on the nation and continues to influence social movements today.

Sky’s the Limit

From the plea to a founding Father, to the suffragists, to Title IX, and the first female political figures, women have blazed a steady trail toward equality in the United States.  And while some glass ceilings have been shattered, others still remain. Never forget what Hilary Clinton said while accepting her nomination, “When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit.”
