International Women’s Day 2023

International Women’s Day 2023

International Women's Day

Today is International Women’s Day.  International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Today is a great day to celebrate the women who inspire us.

2 Important International Women

This year I want to highlight two incredible women.  A young lady that has worked hard to keep the topic of Climate Change alive around the world.  And a brave Irish Somalian who is trying to stop a harmful traditional practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Greta Thunberg – Environmental activist

This 18-year-old is one of the world’s best known climate campaigners.  Born on January 3,  2003, she is a Swedish environmental activist who is known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action for climate change mitigation. Greta burst onto the world stage in 2018 when she did a one-person school strike outside the Swedish parliament. This one-person strike ended up galvanizing a global climate movement to demand immediate action to prevent environmental catastrophes.

She has given speeches at the World Economic Forum, the British Parliament, U.S. Congress and even at the United Nations climate summit, COP26 where she said in one speech, “How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”

Ifrah Ahmed – Somalian Women’s Rights Activist

Ifrah arrived in Ireland, claiming asylum, as a teenager after fleeing Somalia in 2006. A medical check followed where doctors discovered she was a victim of FGM .  Instead of focusing on building a new life she decided to try to save others from this harmful traditional practice.  This procedure is recognized internationally as a violation of women and girls’ human rights that can cause short and long-term health problems.

This practice is still common and has affected more than 200 million women and girls alive today that have undergone FGM in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In Somalia, 98 percent of women and girls have undergone some form of FGM, the highest incidence in the world.

International Women’s Day 2023 – Theme #EmbraceEquity

We all win when women are empowered.  Let’s challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and let’s seek out inclusion. Collective non-violent acts of solidarity are what drives change. From grassroots action to wide-scale momentum, we can all embrace equity.
