Hurray It’s Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day

No, its not the heartwarming movie starring Bill Murray.  Every February 2nd a furry burrowing rodent shows his head to predict if spring is near or 6 more weeks of winter.  Yep, that’s it.  No meteorological weather gages or high pressure moving in from the west from the TV weather professionals.  It’s Punxsutawney Phil showing his head out of his winter stump just to see if he sees his shadow or not.

More Winter PredictedGround Hog Day 2

Nothing can keep that weather prognosticating groundhog down. Thousands watched on as Phil popped out of his burrow at 7:25 a.m. this morning to a frigid 20-degree weather to see his shadow.  Tradition says Phil seeing his shadow is a sign that the next six weeks will bring wintery weather. If Phil doesn’t see his shadow, it means an early spring. So be prepared, winter it will be!

History of Groundhog Day

The roots of Groundhog Day aren’t as random as they might seem. Groundhog Day, featuring this furry rodent meteorologist, was celebrated for the first time on February 2, 1887, at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa.

Predictors

According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow.  Predicting six more weeks of winter weather.  And no shadow means an early spring. In reality, groundhogs don’t make the best meteorologists. And poor Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t have a great track record. As of 2022, he has made the right call just 39% of the time.

Imitators

Punxsutawney Phil’s popularity has inspired several imitators: There’s Buckeye Chuck, from my home state of Ohio.  And there is Staten Island Chuck in New York, Pierre C. Shadeaux of Louisiana, just to name a few fellow groundhog weather prognosticators. But there’s only one Phil, and he’s the original.

No matter how you choose to celebrate this auspicious occasion be sure to wear your sunglasses because is seems to be sunny outside.  Oh, and don’t put away your mittens just yet, Phil says there is still winter weather to come.
