From the 1950s until the end of the 20th century, being considered a nerd was about as good as having the Black Plague. If you were a nerd, people thought you were a social pariah. And, you would have had sand kicked in your face or your glasses broken. But, since the turn of the millennium, its suddenly became cool to be a nerd or a geek.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment when the public’s perception of the nerd, geeks, and the geeky nerd culture shifted. So yes, the geek culture is becoming part of mainstream society. But, when things changed, they changed in a big way. Comic-Con became the new Super Bowl. But it’s not just the giant conferences that have become the bee’s knees. Everything from gardening to home brewing, and even dressing well has become super cool. And this is just the tip of the nerd iceberg.

Tens of millions of adults today play video games compared to the 1990s, when it was something that only kids did. In nerd culture there is something for everyone. Also, Geeks and nerds are no longer dominated by boys and men. Today, girls and women are joining this community as well.

The new nerds and geeks are a bit more social as well. Now Geeks and Nerds have more access to people that are just like them. They have their own community where they socialize and meet other like-minded geeks. Geeks and nerds are now a global thing.
