June is National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month. How would you define safety?  “Safety” and “Security” are too often used interchangeably, as if they mean the same thing. The  Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines safety as the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.”  They define security as “the quality or state of being secure; such as freedom from danger.”

There are laws for the workplace such as, safety codes and standards for a safer place to work, to help secure your safety.  In your home you feel safe with smoke alarms, cut-off breakers, etc., which makes you feel more secure.  When you are driving or traveling, your car has airbags, locks on doors, etc., to help you feel more secure.

What does it mean to be safe?

Safety has both emotional and physical attributes, be for safety can be achieved.  It is only when we are emotionally and physically assured we are, in effect, safe.

What is Security?

Security is the process for ensuring safety.  Safeguards are the things that we expect to be in place to feel safe. In order for security to be effective, a safety plan must be defined and be consistent.

Safety vs Security

Security is the umbrella in a storm that keeps you dry from the rain. Safety lies in the importance of staying dry. The Security is the safeguard that makes sure that safety remains a constant. We have thermostats to maintain room temperatures in our homes. As well as locks to secure our doors at home. However, the outside isn’t as easily controlled. Weather forecasts may warn us of rain, but, being safe still requires our participation.   Awareness + Preparation = Safety.

The National Safety Council encourage ways to prevent injuries on the job, at home, or on the road. Get involved.  And share ways that your team can practice preparedness, wellness, as well as to prevent injuries.

Make a Plan – Work Your Plan

One of the best ways to prepare for any emergency is to create a list of step-by-step procedures. This will help your team respond properly to an emergency or natural disaster. Natural disasters can cause millions of dollars in damage. However, the damage can be reduced when a team recognizes how to respond. One of the most important tips to remember is for people to remain calm.  Have a plan and work your plan when an emergency presents itself.
