Earth Day 2023

Earth Day 2023

Earth Day

Since 1970, people around the world have used Earth Day to raise environmental awareness through events, activism, fundraising and volunteerism.  Growing awareness has influenced a worldwide movement and has led to environmentally friendly legislation, advocacy, and research. Today, Earth Day 2023 is celebrated in countries around the world.

The Beginning

Earth Day was started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as encouraging awareness of the growing problems of air, water, and soil pollution.

When 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. That’s when Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in more than 141 countries and putting environmental issues onto the world stage.

Environmental Awareness

Earth Day 2023 is viewed as THE time of environmental consciousness and awareness. And is generally celebrated with outdoor activities with performances, or groups that perform acts of service to the earth like planting of trees, picking up roadside trash, various programs for recycling and conservation, as well as using recyclable containers.

Greta Thunberg – Environmental activist

Climate EARTH

A Times article stated: ‘A stable climate and a well-functioning biosphere require an atmosphere that doesn’t contain too many greenhouse gasses. The carbon dioxide safety level for climate stability is often considered to be around 350 parts per million (ppm), a level we passed in 1987. In February 2022, we then surpassed 421 ppm.  And at current emission levels, our remaining carbon budget for a chance of staying below 1.5°C (minimizing risk of chain reactions) will be gone before the end of this decade. With no effective policies in place, there is no silver bullet or magic technological solution currently in sight.’

Earthday.org

A recent article at Earthday.org stated, ‘Climate change is a human-caused issue, and we can’t change our future without first reassessing our own systems.’  Nations are working to achieve sustainability goals.  Earth Day is the day to be inspired and to commit to what we can all do to be part of the green movement.
