Happy Diwali

Over 1 billion people worldwide will be  participating in Diwali festivities this week. Diwali is one of the largest celebrations across India.   It’s a colorful holiday that marks the Hindu calendar’s new year and commemorates the triumph of good over evil.  And let’s face it Good over Evil is always something to celebrate.

Why Is Diwali Celebrated?

Many Hindus recognize Diwali  as a day celebrating the return of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife, and brother after 14 years of exile. Prince Rama was considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Being overjoyed at the return of their rightful King lamps were lit in his honor. Thus, the entire city looked like a row of lights.

Widely Celebrated

The term ‘Diwali’ comes from the Sanskrit term, Deepavali, which means row of lights. It’s mostly celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, but people of other beliefs and backgrounds will make up almost 20% of those celebrating across the globe! Diwali symbolizes the spiritual ‘victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.’

5-Day Celebration

The western world will have fireworks and celebrations during this 5-day period.  Each day has a different significance.  Indian spice, incense and firecrackers become special memories for those celebrating.

Day 1: Dhanteras –  Many dedicate their worship to Goddess Lakshmi. People will clean the house, Make rangolis or Kolam, go shopping, and make sweet and savory Indian treats.

Day 2: Chhota Diwali, Kalakaua’s –  Referred to as small Diwali.  Homes will be decorated with rangoli, and clay lamps are displayed.

Day 3: Diwali – People dress in new clothes and visit the temple to perform a puja  for Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh. Light Diya’s around the house.  Moreover, lights will be kept on, eating delicious food, sweets, and celebrating.

Day 4: Annakut, Padwa, Govardhan Puja – First day of the new year for many regions.  It is celebrated by exchanging gifts and best wishes, taking the time to be grateful for what they have and to share with others.

Day 5: Bhai Duj, Bhai Bheej – This is siblings’ day. To honor sister-brother bonds and to get together to enjoy a nice meal together.

However, you choose to celebrate Diwali, remember its meaning, light over dark, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Have a good Diwali everyone.
