Toledo-area companies are dealing with the labor shortage

Cardinal Staffing Services was interviewed by the Toledo Blade recently who spoke with several companies recognized in its 2022 Top Workplaces competition to learn more about their recruiting and retention challenges, and how they are handling them.

“ There’s a lot of people recruiting, there’s a lot of people posting jobs out there. So kind of working your way to the top of that [is tough],” said Christina Ice, vice president of business development for Cardinal Staffing Services in Maumee.  Ms. Ice knows the scope of time-consuming hiring issues that companies face better than most, as many turn to Cardinal Staffing for help filling positions — and as Cardinal itself tries to hold onto its own 60 employees.

“If you go to Company A that’s running an HR department of two or three people, they don’t have the time to dedicate to finding the employees that they need,” she said. “So a lot of times, the workload it takes to get a person in the door is much higher than it was before. You have to go through so many more candidates, you have to work harder to attract them in the first place.”

Companies said they are also spending more time trying to make their current workers happy and avoid high turnover rates. Otherwise — with so many other openings in the job market — a handful of departures can quickly spiral out of control.

Culture is a huge conversation [applicants want to] have,” Ms. Ice said. “They want to make sure they’re working in a place that matches who they are. And I think right now people can choose to be a little more selective.”

It can’t all be monetary incentives to keep people around, she said. Sometimes, it’s about small things like sending lunches to a certain office, sending a team member to support another short-staffed branch, or encouraging an employee to go home early. Recruiting Companies are using several strategies to find talent that goes well beyond just a  job posting/listing.

Cardinal Staffing’s referral bonus helps attract more qualified applicants for various companies. It pays the current worker a set amount for providing the referral, as well as the person they are referring for the job.  Cardinal Staffing will sometimes increase the incentive amount for referrals when it has lots of positions to fill.

Raising salaries a must Many northwest Ohio companies said they have raised salaries in recent months — in some cases dramatically — to stay competitive.
“A lot of people right now have the option to find employment that is at a salary they prefer,” Ms. Ice said. “They can demand kind of what they want.”
“It’s definitely been a wild ride,” said Ms. Ice, whose company has seen growing business as firms struggle to hire. “I don’t think it’s over.”  “We are committed though to our community, businesses and our employees.”

Cardinal Staffing Services is the GO TO staffing company for skilled trades as well as professional, administrative, manufacturing, etc.
